Nick
NICK OPENED HIS EYES.
He stared at a firelit ceiling.
The red embers made strange, glowing patterns on the wood, like water flowing beneath a volcano. From that light alone, he could tell the fire had burned down to almost nothing, that the room was mostly dark.
He wondered that no one had tended to the fire.
He didnât get cold, but seers did.
It struck him then, that his head was resting on a person, not furniture, or the wall, or even the floor. His head rested comfortably on a now-familiar, muscular shoulder, and something about that single fact made him close his eyes, exhaling a breath he didnât need to breathe.
Relief.
The feeling was relief.
That relief nearly overcame him briefly, making him weirdly, intensely emotional, if in a strangely vague way. He didnât know what emotion he felt exactly, but tears came to his eyes, a new sensation as a vampire.
They didnât affect his eyes like human tears.
His eyes didnât sting, his throat didnât close, his chest didnât hitch.
The tears simply flowed, silent, once theyâd become too much to contain.
It occurred to him, a second later, the organic band was absent from around his jaws.
His mouth was closed, his fangs retracted. Despite smelling the seerâs skin and blood all around him, despite swimming in that scent, in the otherâs sweat and the smell of his body and hair, he didnât feel the need to do anything about that, either.
It struck him a few seconds later that heâd been asleep.
Heâd been⦠asleep.
Vampires didnât sleep.
From behind him, he heard and felt a vibrating chuckle.
âTrying to decide whether to kick my ass or not?â a deep voice asked. âOr just trying to decide if you want to bite me?â
Nick opened his mouth to answer.
His mind went totally blank.
Before heâd recovered enough to speak, fingers gently brushed the hair off his forehead and out of his eyes, caressing the side of his face, then his jaw, then his throat.
Nick could have bitten him so easily.
He didnât.
Really, the fact that he didnât want to, at least not in any kind of aggressive way, struck him as surreal more than anything.
Then it confused him.
Frowning, he focused back on the wooden ceiling.
âDid you hypnotize me?â he said.
Another low chuckle vibrated Nickâs back.
That time, somehow, it made him smile.
âHypnotize?â the familiar voice said. âNo. Truthfully, brother, I didnât do anything really⦠apart from not leave. And listen to you rant. And worry you might hurt yourself, and whether Iâd be able to stop you if you really tried. And, letâs not forget⦠the blood-curdling screaming at all hours of night. And dealing with you lying on me like a block of cold cement, occasionally kneading me with your bones⦠like a cat on a pillow that dissatisfies them.â
Listening to all of that, Nick grunted.
He didnât move, though⦠his head, or his body.
The latter leaned heavily on the chest and abdomen of the seer, and after hearing Dalejemâs words, Nick couldnât help but notice how much warmer the seerâs skin and body was, compared to his.
